One of the strongest arcs of the series, it demonstrated what a little confidence in one’s true identity can accomplish.įor such a pivotal part of his epic saga, Isayama did not disappoint when constructing Attack on Titan's multi-layered Battle of Shinganshina sequence. But, in that scene where Historia is asked to turn herself into a titan for the good of the royal family, Historia rebels, breaking the syringe of titan serum and body-slamming her father. This plot, masterminded by her supposed father, Rod Reiss, was intended to restore the Founding Titan powers stolen by Grisha Yeager to the royal family.įrom the time she was young, Historia had often found herself the victim of powers greater than herself, including a supposedly healthy relationship with her older half-sister, Frieda, which was also taken from her when Frieda would routinely wipe her mind of their interactions. A girl who was witness to terrible murders and government subterfuge as a child, Historia later found herself at the center of a conspiracy involving the Military Police Brigade, which carried out an operation to abduct her and Eren in order to have her voluntarily turn herself into a titan, consume him, and gain his titan powers. The long and twisted road of Historia Reiss, also known as Krista Lenz, is one seemingly rife with contradictions. It was also this plain-spoken wish that Levi overheard the night before the Battle of Shinganshina which would eventually lead him to choose to give Armin the titan serum over Erwin, allowing him to devour Bertholdt and become the new Colossal Titan (and by extension, survive grievous injury.) And, after this traumatic event, Armin would eventually see the ocean in a small moment of respite for the series’ oft-unending bleakness. However, it was this simple dream that provided a touchstone the trio could return to, no matter how chaotic their journeys become. Possessed of one of the few books recording this natural wonder which lay beyond the walls, Armin would often tell his childhood friends Mikasa and Eren of his desire to lay his own eyes upon it one day, a habit which made him the subject of much ridicule by some of the more rambunctious children. One of the great running storylines for the first three seasons of the anime, and for the pre-time skip era in the manga, was Armin Arlert’s desire to see the mythologized ocean.
